The ways how to improve your writing vary greatly, which ones suit and help you best depend on you. Let's have a look at the most simple and useful pieces of advice, at least for me:
Write every single time it's possible
Just keep writing even if you don't feel like that. Yes, this is a matter that requires constant efforts. Nonetheless, the more you write, the better your writing becomes! If you are really determined to become a true master at writing, you should write something in English almost every day, that's where the secret lies. The question that has just popped up in your head is 'What should I write?' It may be just a few sentences in which you describe what has been done or just your thought about something. The main point here is not to overdo it, make sure you don't push yourself too hard. In case you have to study for an exam more writing is needed for sure, you may just write the answer to your exam questions.
Your writing needs to be checked
Who can be that 'checker' will you ask? It can be your English teacher who will willingly help you if you attend an English class, or just try www.italki.com* or www.lang-8.com; they both suggest corrections for free.
The checked version should be learned by heart
In order not to make the same mistake, which is definitely a common thing, at least for me, I find it really useful just to learn the right answer or collocation by heart each time the mistake is found. I do recommend using flashcards software like Anki in this case. Here you are also allowed to practice any grammar troubles that you have.
Your vocabulary needs to be increased
Your vocabulary should be constantly enriched with new phrases. Otherwise, how can your language become more sophisticated if you don't read and study vocabulary? When learning, keep in mind that it's recommended to study collocations, not single words.
Keep an eye on very basic things when you're writing
It goes about simple things like using full stops and capital letters where they need to be used, check the spelling it also matters! Using abbreviations like 'u' instead of 'you' should be avoided (only very informal text messages may include that).
As it is seen the ways to improve your writing are simple and achievable, make sure you are writing and reading on a regular basis a lot. Imprint on your memory that the basics of spelling and grammar and try to be creative as possible paying attention to editing.
